Lee McBee & the Confessors
“A Sunday fix of Lee McBee”
Lee McBee’s ongoing residency at B.B.’s Lawnside Bar-B-Q is every Sunday at 6 p.m.
Lee is such a fixture on the scene I guess I just overlooked it, figuring that I can always catch up with him any time. Fact of the matter is, there is very little else anywhere going on as satisfying as anything Lee McBee does.
Lee himself is a harp master, among the best in the country, hands down. That he is here with us every week is like stialing from everyone else, he is so good it is a sin and a guilty pleasure.
He plays the harp like a man. He has a full tone, as big as anyone, with dynamics that rise and fall with every emotion he convery. His phrasing, his lines are always original. He is fresh and vital. He plays it like it is the first time.
And he sings with a passion that infuses every song with the reality of a man alive to the moment. He puts everything into it, he just don’t quit. No posturing, just what is real.
Even though the songs are old, they are performed as if new, as if they’d never been heard before. There is that sense of dangerous territory discovers, a sense of a different country, blues country, newly encountered. It aint” an ente4rtainment, it’s another world. And that is worth the price of admission!
